SY BCom students get three new options to choose from

SY BCom students get three new options to choose from

Thousands of second-year commerce students will have many more options to pick from. While the university is revising the curriculum for the upcoming academic year,it is also adding three new optional subjects like retail, insurance and entrepreneurial management.

First-year commerce students have to study for all the seven compulsory papers. In the second year, the university allows students to pick one subjects they would like to specialize in,apart from the five compulsory papers.

Currently, there are nine subjects that the varsity offers in the basket of optional papers like advertising and marketing.Currently, advertising,is the hot favourite. The idea to include three more subjects stems from the fact that these are sectors that are opening up and there will be many job opportunities for our graduates in these areas, said dean of commerce Madhu Nair.At the University of Mumbai, the commerce stream has over the years, aligned itself to become the natural precursor to the MBA course.

Many business families in the city send their children to study commerce so they can pick up business skills.Entrepreneurial management will allow the student to start something new or take up the family business, said Nair.

These programmes are being defined as practical subjects. We have consulted all the three industries and taken their opinion while drafting the syllabi, added Nair.

Universities math doesn’t add up: 100-mark LLB paper totals to 108

Universities math doesn’t add up: 100-mark LLB paper totals to 108

The University of Mumbai got its maths wrong once again. After giving TYBA students an incomplete French paper recently,it handed second-year LLB students a question paper on Friday in which the total marks added up to 108,eight more than the required maximum of 100.
The LLB students were taking the fourth semester paper on land laws when some felt that the paper appeared longer than usual.A few students totalled the marks and found that more questions than necessary had been crammed into the paper. When some of us complained about it,the supervisor got in touch with university officials about the mistake, said a student who was taking the exam at Lords College. The authorities then asked the supervisors to inform all students that the third question, which carried 20 marks, should be considered a 12-mark question.

However, university officials said they have not yet taken a decision on the matter. We asked the paper setter to give us a solution as to how the 108-mark paper could be brought down to 100 marks. We have called for a board of examination meeting on Monday, said controller of examinations Deepak Wasave.

Several students were disappointed when told that the marks for the third question were being slashed from 20 to 12.Question three required students to answer any two of three choices. Many students had already answered the questions in detail assuming that each carried 10 marks, said a parent whose son could not complete the paper.Suddenly, the supervisor announced that the marks for each question had been reduced to six.Law papers are mostly lengthy and something like this is unpardonable.

The same 108-mark paper had another error.Question four asked students to give details of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act,1909.The state was not formed until May 1,1960,and the town planning act was enacted in 1966.That error was not even corrected. Many of us are wondering who is setting our question papers, said a student.

In the past week,at least three other paper setters have goofed up.Last Saturday postgraduate students across all exam centres received question papers for an exam that was to be held 10 days later. Then, firstyear master of science students were handed the Environment Science Paper IV instead of Paper I.The paper setter had erroneously slipped Paper IV into the envelope meant for Paper I.In another instance, the university had to summon the paper setter of the exam for TYBA French students as the paper was incomplete.

Wasave said these faults were those of the paper setters and the universitys image should not be tarnished. The university only comes up with mechanisms and defines processes. We cannot check question papers after they have been set, he said.

GAFFE TRACKER

Last Saturday, postgraduate students received the question papers meant for an exam to be held 10 days later

First-year MSc students were handed the Environment Science Paper IV instead of Paper I.After students pointed out the blunder, fresh question papers were sent
University had to summon paper setter as the question paper for TYBA French students was incomplete

Model answer book of the MHRM paper distributed among all evaluators as a guide to correcting the final-year TYBCom paper had an error. The faculty member provided the wrong answer for one multiple choice question carrying one mark.A day after assessment began,a senior teacher at Podar College pointed out the mistake in the model answer booklet. It was rectified and the assessment redone

Mumbai University makes world’s Top 20 millionaire alumni list

Mumbai University makes world’s Top 20 millionaire alumni list

London: The University of Mumbai has more multi-millionaires as alumni than the University of Cambridge or Brown University. And if universities from the US are excluded,it is second only to Oxford in the number of students who have gone on to become super-rich.

The Unversity of Mumbai is the only Indian entry in a top 20 graduate rich list that has ranked universities that will make you a millionaire. With 372 multi-millionaires (net worth: $37 billion) as alumni,it is ranked 18th in the list.

Delhi University also finds mention, though it does not figure in the top 20.It has 229 super-rich alumni.
A research by wealth analyst Wealth-X said Harvard boasts of the highest number of rich alumni: 2,964 multi-millionaires worth a total of $622 billion.

Harvard is also the alma mater of 52 billionaires, the largest number of billionaire alumni. The list was compiled by counting the number of former students from each university who are believed to be worth at least 20 million, taking into account their earnings, properties and other assets.

Oxford tops the list from the UK with 401 super-rich graduates, but Cambridge has more billionaires. The list, which is dominated by American universities, has Oxford at No.16 and Cambridge at No.19.
University of Mumbai has the highest percentage of ultra high net worth (UHNW) alumni who have inherited their wealth at 27% as well as the highest percentage of UHNW alumni who have inherited wealth and proceeded to create fortunes of their own at 29%, the study says.So,44% of multimillionaire alumni from Mumbai University are self-made.

One of Indias oldest universities, it was established in 1857 and boasts of alumni such as Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar.
