SY BCom students get three new options to choose from

Thousands of second-year commerce students will have many more options to pick from. While the university is revising the curriculum for the upcoming academic year,it is also adding three new optional subjects like retail, insurance and entrepreneurial management.

First-year commerce students have to study for all the seven compulsory papers. In the second year, the university allows students to pick one subjects they would like to specialize in,apart from the five compulsory papers.

Currently, there are nine subjects that the varsity offers in the basket of optional papers like advertising and marketing.Currently, advertising,is the hot favourite. The idea to include three more subjects stems from the fact that these are sectors that are opening up and there will be many job opportunities for our graduates in these areas, said dean of commerce Madhu Nair.At the University of Mumbai, the commerce stream has over the years, aligned itself to become the natural precursor to the MBA course.

Many business families in the city send their children to study commerce so they can pick up business skills.Entrepreneurial management will allow the student to start something new or take up the family business, said Nair.

These programmes are being defined as practical subjects. We have consulted all the three industries and taken their opinion while drafting the syllabi, added Nair.
